Danny Murphy has signed a new one-year contract with Fulham.

The 31-year-old former England midfielder moved to Craven Cottage from Tottenham in August 2007 and helped Fulham avoid relegation last season.

His goal in their final day win over Portsmouth saw the Cottagers stay in the Premier League on goal difference.

Murphy, who began his career at Crewe and has also played for Liverpool and Charlton, also has an option of staying at the club a further year.

He was out of contract at the end of June but has been rewarded for his consistent form which saw him feature in 33 of Fulham's 38 league games last campaign.

Next season, Murphy will compete to play in midfield with recent signings Andranik Teymourian and Zoltan Gera.

But his new deal is likely to pave the way for Steve Davis to make his loan move to Rangers permanent.
