Diop made his name against France in the 2002 World Cup |
Fulham have signed Senegal midfielder Pape Bouba Diop from French club Lens for an undisclosed fee. The 26-year-old came to prominence by scoring Senegal's shock winner against France in the 2002 World Cup.
Boss Chris Coleman told the club website: "I have already said how important these last few weeks have been to the club in terms of signings.
"I'm more than delighted to have been able to secure the services of some quality players."
Diop, who has signed a four-year deal, had been training with Portsmouth, who were unable to match Fulham's offer.
Ironically, Fulham turned their attentions to Diop after their interest in Portsmouth's Senegal midfielder Amdy Faye ended when he failed a medical on a knee injury. Diop enjoyed a spell in Swiss football with Grasshoppers of Zurich before joining Lens in January 2002.
He made 25 appearances in Le Championnat last season, scoring three goals, and he also netted twice in Lens' Uefa Cup campaign.
