Everton can win derby - Goodlass

Former Everton winger Ronny Goodlass believes the Blues can beat Liverpool in their FA Cup fourth round tie.

The Merseyside rivals meet at Anfield in the stand-out fixture of the round after the Reds' victory over Preston and Everton's win over Macclesfield.

"It's a really tasty cup tie," Goodlass told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"Both teams are in good form and Everton's away form this season has been absolutely excellent. We go into the game with a lot of confidence."

It could have been an easier draw for both teams

The tie will be the second meeting between the sides in the space of seven days and it is the first time they have met in the competition since 1991, when the Blues progressed to the sixth round following two replays.

But the BBC Radio Merseyside summariser says the excitement will have spread throughout Merseyside already.

"The supporters will be talking about it for the next couple of weeks and its something to look forward to," Goodlass continued.

"Maybe it could have been later in the competition but you just have to get on with it.

"There are two games in a week and we'd love to beat them twice in a week. But it could have been an easier draw for both teams."

Even though Liverpool top the table at present, Goodlass admits Everton must go there with no fear.

"When you go into a derby game it doesn't matter how well you're playing its about how well you play on the day.

"We can go there and give it a good go."

It's a derby game and form goes out the window

Former Liverpool striker David Johnson

Liverpool have a great record in recent derby matches and beat Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park in September.

Former Liverpool and Everton striker David Johnson told BBC Radio Merseyside he was eagerly anticipating the clash.

"Its a massive draw for both teams," he said.

"Anytime when Liverpool play Everton in a derby it's exciting. It's exciting for everyone on Merseyside but I'm certain it is for everyone in the country."

And the man who scored over 50 goals for the red half of Merseyside during the 70s and 80s says even though the game is not a cup final, it's still a massive clash.

"The fact that we're drawn so early on in the competition, it still hasn't detracted from what I think is going to be a fantastic game," Johnson continued.

"To the majority of Merseysiders it's something special. I know what it means to me and I'm sure I'm not alone.

"But it's the excitement of the FA Cup and when you're drawn against your neighbours it's even more so.

"There's lots of history between the two clubs and we have a great tradition in FA Cup competition."

The BBC Radio Merseyside summariser also believes Everton will not want to cross Stanley Park at the moment as the Reds are in potential league championship winning form.

"No team is looking forward to playing Liverpool at the moment with their league position and the way they're playing at the moment. But it's a derby game and form goes out the window.

"Its a pride game as well as it's the FA Cup."
