Everton striker Andy Johnson will have ankle surgery at the end of the season and is set to miss England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia. "After injuring his right ankle, we were hopeful that the subsequent period of rest would help his left ankle," said Everton physio Mick Rathbone.
"That has not been the case and he will have an operation as soon after the final match of the season as possible."
Johnson, 26, could also miss England's game with Brazil on 1 June.
Everton have two games left this season - with the final fixture at home to Chelsea on 13 May.
Johnson suffered a sprained right ankle in the defeat at West Ham on Saturday 21 April - but has had a lingering problem with his left ankle for some time.
Rathbone added: "Andy has had the problem for a number of months now and it is getting no better."
England play Estonia on 6 June, though coach Steve McClaren may be able to call upon Newcastle's Michael Owen for that fixture following the striker's return after a lengthy injury.
