Weir joined Everton from Hearts in 1999 for 200,000 |
Everton defender David Weir is ready to fight for his starting place after signing a new one-year deal. The 36-year-old was out of contract at the end of last season but has decided to remain at Goodison Park.
Weir will face competition from new signing Joleon Lescott for a starting berth but told the club's website: "Competition is good for everyone.
"Centre-halves have arrived at the club in the past and it's my job to try and get into the team."
Weir had been linked with possible moves to Championship sides West Brom and Birmingham but is confident he has made the right decision to stay on Goodison.
He said: "Most players who have left Everton have regretted it and although I had other options, this club was always going to be the winner.
"The players are a great bunch of lads and the staff are great as well and that makes a big difference."
