Everton fell to a single goal as Athletic Bilbao spoiled Howard Kendall's testimonial party. The 17,868 who came to honour the former Toffees boss saw an Everton side outclassed by Bilbao, who only narrowly avoided relegation last term.
And that was despite summer signings Andrew Johnson, Joleon Lescott and Tim Howard all playing a part.
Aritz Aduriz scored Bilaboa's goal on 16 minutes, while Johnson came closest for Everton when he hit the woodwork.
