Everton striker Kevin Campbell has been ruled out for the first month of the season with a hamstring injury. The forward limped off after just 10 minutes of the 3-0 win over Bologna on Sunday and a scan revealed the full extent of the damage.
Boss David Moyes faces something of a striker crisis ahead of the big kick-off to the season.
Duncan Ferguson is banned for the first three games of the season and Wayne Rooney is struggling with an ankle ligament problem that has ruled him out of the last four pre-season friendlies.
But Moyes is hopeful England forward Rooney will soon be back in action.
He said: "Wayne has a good chance of making it, but he's not kicked a ball for a while and won't be doing so until the back end of the week. It's touch and go but we believe he has a chance."
Everton have completed the signing on a two-year contract of 17-year-old Lazio forward Patrizio Pascucci.
But he will not be considered for Saturday's trip to Arsenal where Moyes will probably have to play Nick Chadwick alongside Tomasz Radzinski.
