Gascoigne's move was not completed in time for him to play against Preston on Sunday, but he will be paraded on the pitch before the game.

The former England midfielder could make his Clarets debut against Bradford City on Tuesday.

Burnley will be hoping Gascoigne's signing will provide a timely boost to their faltering play-off campaign.

Clarets' boss Stan Ternent signed Gascoigne's former England colleague Ian Wright on a short-term deal two years ago and the former Arsenal hitman fired Burnley to Second Division promotion.

Ternent made an attempt to take Gascoigne on loan earlier in the month but was knocked back by former Everton boss Walter Smith who insisted he was still part of Everton's plans this season.

But when Smith was axed as Goodison Park boss, Ternent renewed his interest.

Gascoigne spoke to new Everton manager David Moyes about his future.

But Moyes was unable to persuade Gascoigne to stay.

Gascoigne was out of contract in the summer and was believed to be unhappy with Smith's sacking.

Moyes said: "He was upset with a few things not to do with Everton and maybe he felt it was right to play his football elsewhere."

Burnley chairman Barry Kilby said: "Basically, he wants to come here and we want him here.

"We have taken over his contract at Everton for the rest of the season, similar to the Ian Wright signing a few years ago.

"We will take it to the end of the season and then see what options are open for both of parties."
