Andy Goram helped Queen of the South win the Bell's Cup

Former Scotland international and Rangers legend Andy Gorman ended 10 months out of the game when he started as a trialist for Elgin City against Albion Rovers at Borough Briggs on Saturday.

Third Division Elgin have conceded 27 goals so far this season, worse than any club in the country.

And Goram failed to make a difference in his first game, Elgin losing 5-1.

He played for Queen of the South last season in the Scottish First Division but was not offered a new contract.

A player-coach job in Brazil fell through and the 39-year-old had feared that he would have to call time on his professional career.

But former Rangers team-mate David Robertson has stepped in to give him another chance and hopes to make the signing permanent.

The Elgin manager reckons says that Goram will be the greatest modern-day player to have played for his club.

Celtic and Scotland legend Jimmy Johnstone turned out for the then Highland League outfit in the 1978-79 season.

"I don't know if he would be the greatest layer we have ever had, because Jimmy Johnstone did play for us as well," said Robertson.

"But he would certainly be the greatest player of the modern game to play for Elgin."

Elgin become the tenth club of Goram's long and distinguished career.

Goram started with Oldham Athletic before heading to Hibernian, Rangers, Notts County, Sheffield United, Motherwell, Manchester United and Coventry City.
