Debut blow for new signing Whelan

Former Leeds United, Aberdeen and Livingston striker Noel Whelan has lasted just four minutes of his debut after signing for Dunfermline Athletic.

The 30-year-old, released by Livi at the end of the season, had impressed on trial and signed a one-year contract.

But he had to go off injured after four minutes against Hearts on the opening day of the Scottish Premier League.

Pars' Jim Leishman had rushed through the signing, despite Whelan's lack of fitness, as he was short of strikers.

"He knows himself he is not fit at the moment, but he's trained hard for a week and a bit," had said before the game.

"He is an experienced player who is big and strong and will do a job for us."
