Javier Clemente has been in charge of top club sides |
Former Spain boss Javier Clemente is considering applying for the vacant manager's job at Dunfermline. But it appears that Davie Hay, who has left Livingston, and former Burnley boss Stan Ternent remain favourites.
Hay has previously worked with Pars general manager Jim Leishman, while Ternent has already held discussions.
But Clemente, who has club experience in charge of Atletico Madrid and Marseille, could be among a shortlist of five due to be formed on Monday.
The man who led Spain to Euro 96 and the World Cup in 1998 as well as taking charge of Espanyol, could prove to be beyond Dunfermline's financial means.
Dunfermline chairman John Yorkston, who met Hay for an informal chat on Friday, said: "Clemente's name has been put to us by his agent, but I don't know how much seriousness there is in that enquiry. We have to ascertain that.
"But I would suggest he would be looking for a big personal salary for a coach of that calibre and, although I'm guessing here, I suspect his wage would be on another planet to what we can offer.
"It is great to have a name like that interested in us. But, if he wanted to come to Britain, I have got to think there would be bigger clubs than ourselves who are able to take him.
"I'm looking for someone who will be with us for a few years."
Ternent has experience of tight budgets and is hoping for a quick return to management after his contract with English First Division outfit Burnley was not renewed last month.
"I have spoken to Stan Ternent twice and I am looking for an experienced manager and he fits that bill," said Yorkston.
"He is not a manager who has spent millions, he has had to wheel and deal and he is very well respected in England." Tenant had told the Daily Record: "I would seriously consider the chance of managing in Scotland and, if their ambition can match mine, I'd be keen to take over.
"I like the way Dunfermline play the game and, from what I have seen, the squad in place is full of quality."
