Daly scored in the dying minutes at St Mirren Park
Striker Jon Daly admitted to a sense of relief after his 89th-minute strike earned Dundee United a point at St Mirren in the Scottish Premier League.
Sean Lynch had given the home side the lead after 73 minutes despite United dominating much of the match.
"There was a sense of relief when the goal went in," said Daly. "It's a weight off your shoulders to equalise.
"It's just a shame that there were only a couple of minutes left and we didn't have time to go and get the winner."
United finished third last season and many backed them to ease to victory away to a side who have recruited players from the lower divisions this summer.
"We came here wanting to win and I think we were unfortunate that we didn't," said Daly.
We put about 50 crosses into the box at least and we did not get a break until Jon Daly stuck it away
Dundee United manager Peter Houston
"We had plenty of crosses, but it's turning them into chances and the final ball is probably what let us down.
"Things just didn't seem to be going our way. Everything seemed to be dropping to them until the last minute, when it just fell at my feet and I put it away.
"I had thought it looked as though it was going to be one of those days, because we were dominating, then St Mirren had their first real shot on target of the second half and it flew into the top corner."
United manager Peter Houston was happy to escape with a point, pointing out that only Celtic and Rangers had beaten his side on their league travels last season.
"When you look at the second half, it was waves of attack towards the St Mirren goal and we got caught with a goal that dropped to the edge of the box and the guy's hit it and it's gone in the top bin. You can't legislate for that," he said.
"We put about 50 crosses into the box at least and we did not get a break until Jon Daly stuck it away.
"So I am a wee bit frustrated we didn't get the three points because I thought we merited them.
"But, great credit to St Mirren, they worked hard, they defended well and they put their heads in for all those crosses I mentioned.
"So, in the end, I'm probably happy with the point because we were losing 1-0 with so little time left."
Meanwhile, Houston dismissed newspaper reports that Rangers had stepped up their interest in David Goodwillie, saying there had never been any contact from the Scottish champions about the United striker.
