Houston's side are heading to Hampden to face Raith Rovers

Dundee United manager Peter Houston hailed the battling qualities of his side after they ousted Rangers in the Scottish Cup quarter-final replay.

David Robertson's last-minute goal won the match for the Tangerines.

"From the goalkeeper to the strikers, we merited the victory tonight and I'm absolutely delighted," he said.

"I'm so proud of the players because they sent the Dundee United fans home singing and they're now looking forward to a semi-final in the cup."

United, who will face Raith Rovers in the semi-final, were on top for most of the match and survived a brief spell of Rangers pressure before striking late for victory.

"I thought, in the first half, our players were magnificent," Houston said.

"What I was concerned about was that we maybe put too much into the game in the first half and for a spell in the second half Rangers started to take control. Our midfield looked a wee bit tired.

"But we dug in and we showed what Rangers had on Sunday (in the League Cup final against St Mirren), had resilience and character and kept going. I felt we weathered the storm from Rangers and then we started to take over again.

"The last thing I wanted was extra-time and all of a sudden, David Robertson goes in on a ball and I think (goalkeeper) Allan McGregor's been a wee bit unfortunate as the two of them come together and it's gone into the net.

"But I've never been so pleased to see anything going into the net.

"When we were lagging a wee bit in the second half, the supporters started singing and I think it lifted the players again so great, great credit to them. They helped win the tie for us."
