Andy Webster hopes for a recall to the Scotland squad

Will Webster return for Scotland against the Czech Republic?

Dundee United defender Andy Webster is hoping to end a four-year international hiatus when Craig Levein names his first Scotland squad on Monday.

Tannadice manager Peter Houston, also assistant Scotland boss, has tipped Webster to return to the international fold to add to his 22 caps.

But after a run of injuries in his career, Webster is cautious.

"You don't always get what you want in football but international level is the highest stage to perform on," he said.

Levein brought the 27-year-old to Tannadice on a season-long loan deal last summer and he has impressed in the centre of defence.

And it would be no surprise to see Webster's name inked onto Levein's squad for next midweek's friendly against the Czech Republic at Hampden Park.

Webster last won a full Scotland cap in March 2006 against Switzerland, though he scored for a Scotland B side in a 3-0 friendly win over Northern Ireland last May.

But the former Hearts and Wigan player, who returned from a calf injury in the 1-0 defeat at Celtic Park, is simply focusing on his Tannadice career.

"I just want to concentrate on doing well with United and hopefully achieving something," Webster told BBC Scotland.

"I have another year on my Rangers contract and I'll go back there in the summer and compete for my place.

"We all want to bring some level of success to United so I'll focus on that and worry about the rest later.

"From a personal point of view, it was good to get back playing, but from the team's, it's slightly disappointing that we didn't give it a real go against Celtic."

Webster is keen for the Dundee United squad to attain a level of consistency that can see them finish in a European place come the end of the season.

Hibernian's defeat to Motherwell at Fir Park made United's loss at Parkhead a bit more bearable for those of a tangerine persuasion, but Webster insists they must take care of their own form.

"Hibs losing comes secondary," he told BBC Scotland.

"Our main focus is on doing our own job and I think if you start getting sidetracked by other teams and what they're doing it may take the emphasis off your own job.

"Any team in any league strives for consistency and I think that's something that every team should look to achieve.

"You want to have that level of consistency week in, week out, where you know roughly what you're going to get, and if you know you play well, you know you'll win most matches."
