Levein aiming for two new faces

Willo Flood

Dundee United manager Craig Levein hopes to secure up to two signings after losing Willo Flood to Celtic.

"I think we need to bring in at least one and, if I can get two, I would be thrilled," Levein said after the 2-0 defeat by Rangers on Saturday.

"I made a lot of phone calls after I got wind of the Willo situation. We are a bit short in midfield."

Flood, who had been on loan to United from Cardiff City, was transferred to Celtic on Friday.

Levein, who has until Monday evening to sign players before the close of the January transfer window, was annoyed by the decision to award Rangers the penalty kick that broke the deadlock at Ibrox.

United defender Mihael Kovacevic was ruled to have fouled Rangers 17-year-old John Fleck, who rose to score from the spot-kick.

"I am a bit disappointed to lose to Rangers as I thought there nothing in the game until their penalty," said Levein.

"I thought Mihael did well to get back to him. Both players had their hands across one another and I think the Rangers player has lost control of the ball and has gone down very easily."

United had played out an exhausting Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final against Celtic on Wednesday, losing after extra time and penalties.

"Overall, I am relatively pleased with the way we were able retain our energy levels throughout the match," added Levein.

"But maybe Wednesday's game prevented us having that bit extra needed to get an equaliser."
