![]() | Wednesday, 4 October, 2000, 21:20 GMT 22:20 UK Caniggia signs up at Dundee ![]() Caniggia and Carranza are welcomed by Ivano Bonetti Dundee have signed Argentina's former World Cup star Claudio Caniggia until the end of the season. The 33-year-old striker has agreed a short-term deal with manager Ivano Bonetti which increases Dundee's foreign contingent even further. Caniggia, who has been signed to replace the injured Fabian Caballero, was released by Italian club Atalanta last season. The flamboyant forward said: "I'm happy to be at Dundee for more than one reason. I have joined friends who are at a very ambitious club that is doing very well. "My intention is to do well to repay the club for their trust in me and I will do what I can to make the club even better." Debut He could make his debut in the match with Aberdeen on 14 October. Caniggia, whose previous clubs include River Plate, Boca Juniors and Benfica, was suspended for 13 months in 1993 after testing positive for cocaine while playing for Roma.
His signing is a tremendous coup for the Dens Park club, particularly if he can recapture some of the form which saw him shine at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. Caniggia also revealed that he still harbours dreams of turning out for his national side. "I am feeling young," he said. "I know the coach there and it's my ambition to play again for Argentina. Feeling confident "This is not just a pure fantasy - I am feeling confident that this can happen and it's still possible. "But I have to play well, win games and please the crowd. That is the biggest reward." Caniggia will be joined in Tayside by countryman Beto Carranza - a defender who has also played for the national side in days gone by. Caballero, meanwhile, has had surgery to repair his damaged knee and will undergo extensive rehabilitation at a Bologna clinic. Dundee have also learned that Lee Wilkie will miss just one match through suspension following his red card against Kilmarnock. It had been feared he might miss as many as four games due to his poor disciplinary record, but Wilkie will only be sidelined for the visit to Pittodrie. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Dundee stories: Links to top Dundee stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
