Ivano Bonetti - a wanted man
Ivano Bonetti has made quite an impact at Dundee
Ivano Bonetti has made quite an impact at Dundee
The Tayside police might be after Ivano Bonetti for an unpaid speeding fine, but it may not be just those boys in blue that want a word with the Dundee manager.

Martin O'Neill has quite rightly dominated the back pages, having won the domestic treble in his first season in charge of Celtic.

Alex McLeish has received many plaudits for pulling Hibernian out of the doldrums, but Bonetti's achievements in just his first term in British management have been quite remarkable.

When Bonetti and his brother Dario arrived at Dens Park last summer from the minor Italian club Sestresse many an eyebrow was raised.

Debut marred

As a former star with Juventus and Sampdoria, Bonetti's playing credentials were impeccable, but could he cut it as a coach?

Could uncompromising Scottish defenders like Lee Wilkie, Willie Miller and Stephen Tweed grasp the subtleties of catenaccio?

These concerns were soon dispelled when Bonetti jettisoned most of the natives in the Dundee squad to accomodate a host of Italian, Spanish and South American players.

Bonetti talked a good game, predicting a top-six finish at the first time of asking, which he duly delivered, with a top-three place pledged by the end of his three-year contract.

The roll call of Latin names attracted a large travelling support to witness the first step in the Tayzzuri revolution at Fir Park last July and the new-look Dark Blues put on quite a show.

Fine season

Goals from Billio and Artero were enough to secure a stylish win over Motherwell and set a high standard of free-flowing football that was maintained throughout the season.

However, Bonetti marred a wonderful debut when he received a red card. Sadly, ill-discipline was also to be a feature of Dundee's season and Bonetti's antics on the pitch and in the dugout incurred the wrath of several match officials.

Dunfermline were swept aside at Dens Park the following week to send Bonetti's men to the top of the league and the locals into raptures.

However, they were brought back down to earth when Hibs hammered five past them at Easter Road.

A rollercoaster ride of hot and cold performances followed, with the highlight a 3-0 trouncing of city rivals United.

Claudio Caniggia was a coup for Bonetti
Claudio Caniggia was a coup for Bonetti
The excitement surrounding Dundee reached fever-pitch soon after with the unlikely arrival of former World Cup star Claudio Caniggia.

The Argentine striker made a dream debut in front of a near-full house at Pittodrie, scoring a late goal in Dundee's fine victory.

Caniggia's arrival in Scotland sparked talk of his close pal Diego Maradona coming to play a friendly on Tayside - a deal which collapsed after Diego's public falling out with former club Napoli.

It also moved several South American countries to start broadcasting Dundee's jousts from exotic locales like Kilmarnock and Perth.

The sales of long blonde wigs went through the roof. Caniggia turned in several first-class performances and scored some memorable goals, including a strike in the 2-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox.

European return

Rangers manager Dick Advocaat was so impressed that he immediately made moves to steal Caniggia away for a fee close to 1m.

Dundee secured their top-six place with another win at Pittodrie on the final Saturday before the SPL split and capped a fine season by becoming the only Scottish club to win at Parkhead.

European football returns to Dens Park for first time since 1975 with participation in the Uefa Intertoto Cup.

With the players back in training on Saturday after the shortest ever summer break, some of the staff will not thank Bonetti for the application that sets up a first leg tie with Yugoslav side Sartid on 16 June.

Bonetti's band of foreign all-stars made quite an impact in their first SPL season and, if they can ease off the self-destruct button and overcome the loss of Caniggia, who is to say Bonetti's promise of a top-three place is all that far away?

If Bonetti does manage such a feat, it won't be just the police that come to take him away.
