![]() | Wednesday, 28 June, 2000, 13:41 GMT Doncaster recruit Wignall after poor season ![]() Ian Snodin paid price for Doncaster's poor season Doncaster Rovers finished their second Conference season in 12th position after sacking the management team of Ian and Glynn Snodin just three weeks before the end of the campaign. The Rovers board took action after the club flirted with the threat of relegation, something which was unacceptable to those in control, who had expected the team to be challenging at the other end of the table. Doncaster got off to a mixed start but looked to be turning the corner by Christmas until they picked up just one point out of six from two festive games against nearest neighbours Scarborough. Rovers fell away as spring approached and the writing was on the wall for the Snodin's as the team slipped further down the table. Steve Wignall was swiftly appointed at Belle Vue - just nine games after taking over as manager of Conference rivals Stevenage Borough, a move which sparked fury at the Hertfordshire club and cost Doncaster an undisclosed amount of compensation. Wignall said: "Doncaster's offer came out of the blue, but it was just too good to turn down. I hadn't planned anything like that, but I had to do what was best for my family." One of his first jobs was to sign striker Carl Alford from his former club Stevenage for 50,000. Wignall will be assisted by Alan Lewer, the former Telford United manager. | Other top Doncaster stories: Links to top Doncaster stories are at the foot of the page. | ||
