Butler, who had a short spell as a player at Doncaster in 2002, replaces Barry Richardson following his recent move to Nottingham Forest.

Butler, 41, had spent three separate spells at Halifax in playing and coaching roles.

He also appeared for Aston Villa, Wigan, Barnsley, Lincoln and Dunfermline in his playing career.
