Doncaster hoping to tempt Keegan

Doncaster chairman John Ryan is still hoping to tempt Kevin Keegan into the vacant manager's job at Belle Vue.

Ryan told BBC Radio Five Live: "I have not spoken to him yet but it might be a challenge for him if he is interested in coming back into football.

"We don't know. Kevin is his own man and will make his own mind up.

"He is from Doncaster and I know he has always had an affinity for us so you never know. Stranger things have happened in football."

Former England boss Keegan has been linked with the Rovers post since Dave Penney's departure on 30 August.

With Doncaster poised to move to a new ground at the turn of the year, Ryan sees Keegan as the man to take the club forwards.

"I know Kevin and his record in football is quite incredible," Ryan added.

We've had over 50 applicants, but I can only reiterate nothing has been decided

"He has great enthusiasm and drive and we have a new stadium coming in three months time that could give us an opportunity to play with the big boys if we can just get up there."

Peter Reid has also been linked with the Rovers job but the club say no contact has been made with any candidates so far.

Club spokesman Steve Uttley said: "No contact has been made with Kevin Keegan at this moment in time or anybody else.

"There will be nothing further to say until after the chairman holds his meeting on Wednesday."

Keegan, who is good friends with Rovers chairman John Ryan, is one of the fans favourites to take over following Penney's sudden departure last week.

Doncaster-born Keegan, 55, managed Newcastle, Fulham and England before a four-year spell with Manchester City.

But Uttley added: "I can tell you nothing has been decided.

"Nothing has been decided about who, what or when, other than the fact that there will be a board meeting on Wednesday to discuss the way forward.

"We've had over 50 applicants, some top ones, some stupid ones, but I can only reiterate nothing has been decided."

Mickey Walker and Baz Richardson are in temporary charge at the club - taking first-team affairs for Sunday's League One clash at Port Vale.

Meanwhile, it has been reported Penney is in the running to take over full-time as England Under-21s coach from Crystal Palace manager Peter Taylor, who has been working part-time in the post.
