Derby have appointed Chris Hutchings as assistant manager to replace Stan Ternent, who has been unveiled as Huddersfield Town's new manager.
Hutchings worked with Rams boss Paul Jewell at Bradford and Wigan, where he took charge for six months in 2007.
"He is a people's person - tactically, there are few better than him," Jewell told the club's official website.
Hutchings said: "The ingredients are all here and I'm looking forward to getting back to work."
After Jewell resigned in May 2007, Hutchings took the helm at the Latics but was sacked in November.
The 50-year-old was also Jewell's assistant at Bradford and helped guide the west Yorkshire club to the Premier League in 1999.
The Bantams then endured a difficult season in the top flight but avoided relegation on the final day as they beat Liverpool 1-0 at home.
Jewell then left Bradford and Hutchings stepped up to take the reins but lasted for only 21 competitive games before being sacked in November 2000.
"Our main task is to put together a squad capable to launch a promotional campaign next season," said Jewell.
