Saunders is looking for his first managerial job |
Dean Saunders has been tipped as the next Derby manager, by former Newcastle and Wales striker Malcolm Allen. Saunders, a former Derby striker, lost his role as Newcastle assistant manager on Thursday when the Magpies sacked their under-fire boss Graeme Souness.
Derby are searching for a new manager after they sacked Phil Brown on Monday.
"I know Derby spoke with Dean Saunders last summer over the job vacancy after George Burley left the club," Allen told BBC Wales Sport.
"So that could be a definite option for him, but I hope he's not tarnished with the same brush as Souness because he deserves his chance as a manager."
Saunders scored 57 goals in 131 games for Derby during his three years at the Baseball Ground.
The 41-year-old 77 capped Wales international was suspended on full pay by Newcastle and will meet the club next to iron out a settlement.
