Todd was forced to build his squad from scratch during the summer
Darlington manager Colin Todd has defended his players' poor start to the season, claiming it has been difficult to establish an understanding.
The Quakers were forced to assemble a new side during the summer after most of last year's side left and Todd feels the turnover has made things awkward.
"Other teams have had a nucleus of a squad," he told BBC Tees.
"We've had to start from scratch, we need to start applying ourselves for each other."
However the former Bradford and Derby boss believes there is a bond forming between the players, and is hopeful that they can start beginning to put results together to pull the club clear of their precarious position early in the season.
"When we've scored goals, which hasn't been very often, we've had a great spirit.
"We've got a great camaraderie, it's been tremendous, but we shoot ourselves in the foot sometimes."
Darlington have been bolstered by the arrival of three new players in goalkeeper Russell Hoult from Notts County, defender Tony Kane from Carlisle and midfielder Jamie Devitt from Hull City.
