Abbott crucial to Quakers' hopes

Darlington manager Dave Penney believes having striker Pawel Abbott fit and well will be a huge boost to their bid for promotion from League Two.

Abbott, 27, returned to action with a goal in the 2-1 win against Bournemouth after a long absence and Penney is hopeful he is over his injury problems.

"With Pawel Abbott back we get a better player technically," he told BBC Tees.

"Pawel is a goalscorer and a good footballer and we are delighted to have a player like him back in the side."

The Pole, who cost Darlington a club-record 100,000 when he signed from Swansea in July 2007, has endured a string of comebacks, ultimately ending with another spell on the sidelines.

But this time Penney is confident that the former Preston striker has had plenty of time to get himself right for the rigours of League Two and avoid another breakdown.

"Hopefully. We've had him 18 months now, you can see he's got great quality but we haven't had enough games out of him," he said.

"We've taken our time with him, the idea of the loan players was to give him a bit more time to get fit, and he's been held back slightly by the weather.

"Touch wood, that's him available for the rest of the season."

Meanwhile Penney has once again reiterated his desire for the club to play passing football.

The Quakers manager admitted the weather and quality of the surfaces his side have been playing on have not helped, but is keen for a more attractive approach to become a priority.

"Conditions aren't helping and we get a little bit sucked into playing route one with Hatch up there so we made a point that we should get it down a bit more and pass it," he said.

"It's not enjoyable for me to sit there and watch it. Fair enough when we're chasing the game in the last ten minutes, but not from the start.

"We've got 17 lads training today so we've got more than enough in the side."
