Baptiste was offered a new contract by Mansfield |
Crewe are in talks with Mansfield over a possible move for Stags defender Alex John-Baptiste, according to the player's agent Alex Cowdy. John-Baptiste, 21, is out of contract at Field Mill, but the Stags are entitled to compensation if he moves to another club, because he is under 24.
If nothing is agreed between the clubs, the fee would be settled by a tribunal.
"Crewe are talking to Mansfield about Alex. He's an ambitious lad," Cowdy told the Nottingham Evening Post.
Earlier in the week, Stags manager Billy Dearden told his club's website: "It's common knowledge that I want Alex in the building before we report back on 5 July.
"I suppose you could say he's exercising his right to speak to other clubs."
