Gillespie rues missed opportunity

Steven Gillespie
Gillespie made only his ninth appearance for the U's against Luton

Colchester United striker Steven Gillespie felt they were worth more than their 1-0 defeat to Luton in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday.

Gillespie, who made a return to the U's side after a long injury lay-off, told BBC Essex they should have won the tie.

"We showed what we were about in the second-half and dominated the game, we even started the game well but just conceded a sloppy goal," he said.

"We can't keep giving teams a one goal head-start."

The 23-year-old, who became the U's record signing when he joined from Cheltenham Town for 400,000 during the summer, has been plagued by a succession of thigh and hamstring injuries.

But he was hopeful he had now put those frustrations are over and paid tribute to the work of physiotherapist Tony Flynn.

"I felt really good, I felt sharp and hopefully I can put them behind me and move on," he said.

"The staff here have been really good to me, Tony has done everything he can for me and all I can do is work hard and try to stay injury free."
