Colchester United manager Geraint Williams says he was delighted with the performance of midfielder David Perkins in Tuesday's win at Millwall.
The U's beat the Lions 1-0 in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Perkins scored the winner in his first start for the club after missing four games through suspension.
Williams told BBC Essex: "He's eager to make up time, he was frustrated at missing four games so he wants to make a point that he's after a place.
The U's boss added: "I think all the players out there tonight have showed how much it means to them and how much they want to be in the first team."
