Williams is already looking ahead to League One football

Colchester United boss Geraint Williams has said he will not allow the club to become downhearted despite being relegated from the Championship.

The U's fate was sealed by Barnsley's 3-0 defeat of Watford on Wednesday.

But Williams told BBC Essex: "I don't deal in doom and gloom, it doesn't get you anywhere.

"I was hurting last night and I was hurting this morning but you can either sit in the corner and cry about it, or you can get up and start fighting."

He added: "Everybody at this club will see off this season with as many wins as we can and over the summer work hard to come out fighting next year."

The Layer Road boss admitted they could have few complaints about their drop into League One after two seasons in English football's second tier.

He said: "I feel hurt and disappointed, it's not a feeling that I like.

"But over 46 games you end up where you deserve to be and obviously this is where we deserve to be."

Williams promised the U's fans his side will continue to give their all for the remainder of the season.

"We're always looking ahead," he said. "But we've got to make sure that we don't let this season run out.

"The players showed an awful lot of pride in their shirt and put on a great performance and got a great result for the fans last week [against Ipswich] and we've got to make sure over the next four games that we continue to do that."
