The 38-year-old was a big factor in the U's promotion to the Championship last season, and also doubles up as goalkeeping coach at Layer Road.

Davison told BBC Essex: "This will be my last season. We have all seen what Dean Gerken is capable of. He's the future not me.

"As long as I can contribute this season then I'll play."

Davison added: "But my job is to bring on the youngsters in Dean and Mark Cousins. They are the future."
