Playing it cool
By Mark Mitchener

Wayne Allison
The much-travelled Allison is relishing his role at Saltergate
Striker Wayne Allison is not getting carried away by Chesterfield's 14-game unbeaten league run, after scoring in their 2-1 win at Bournemouth.

"We're not talking about the play-offs - we're just trying to accumulate as many points as we can, and see where that takes us," Allison said.

"We might have been fortunate to go in 1-0 up at half-time, but you have to take your chances to win the game.

"We hung in there, and it was a superb strike by Jamie O'Hara to win it."

Midfielder O'Hara recently joined the Spireites on a three-month loan from Tottenham, and the teenager has already impressed the veteran Allison.

"He's only been here two weeks, but you can tell he's a quality player," the 37-year-old said.

"He's been sent to us to get some experience, which will stand him in great stead.

"If everyone's chipping in with goals and your strikers get into double figures, you'll be up there."

Allison recently netted his 200th goal of a career which has taken in spells at Halifax, Watford, Bristol City, Swindon, Huddersfield, Tranmere and Sheffield United before his move to Saltergate in the summer of 2004.

Everyone's beating everyone else and no-one's pulling away at the top, which has kept a check on things

And the man known as "The Chief" is enjoying his role as an on-field mentor to Roy McFarland's young squad - with the open nature of League One this season set to ensure an exciting run-in.

"I relish the fact they can come to me for advice, and hopefully I can help them along," he said. "I suppose if you get to 50 points at this stage of the season (Chesterfield have 47), you think you're staying up.

"But there are a lot of games still to play - we've got to keep doing what we're doing.

"Everyone's beating everyone else and no-one's pulling away at the top, which has kept a check on things.

"It keeps everybody close and makes it more interesting when supporters look at the league tables on Sunday or Monday and see their team's still in contention.

"Even at the bottom, if you string a few results together, you can reach the top six, which is amazing."

Roy McFarland
McFarland is happy to be in touch with the league leaders

Boss McFarland was pleased to have kept the run going - and while indebted to Allison for the first goal, felt the absence of Bournemouth's own experienced target man was an important factor.

"The win doesn't take us into the top six, but it keeps us in touch," McFarland said.

"Wayne's probably now looking for 300 goals, but we know that when we put the ball in the box, he'll be there or thereabouts.

"We knew Bournemouth would have no change of dimension as they didn't have Steve Fletcher, who was injured.

"We know he's a threat in the air, but pleasingly for us, they didn't have that alternative."
