Cheltenham Town have signed former Aston Villa striker Shane Paul on an initial one-month deal. The 19-year-old was released by Villa in the summer before spending a brief spell with Scunthorpe.
Cheltenham have also taken Swansea City Kris O'Leary on a month's loan to fill Grant McCann's midfield role.
But striker Andy Smith has cut short his loan spell to return to Preston after being left out of Ward's side for Tuesday's FA Cup loss at Scunthorpe.
Meanwhile, boss John Ward has confirmed that the Robins failed in a cash bid for a striker with a Championship club.
