Bobby Gould resigned as manager of Third Division Cheltenham after seeing his side beaten by Rochdale. The former Wales and Wimbledon boss left the field to fans calling for his head at Whaddon Road.
Cheltenham's defeat was their sixth defeat in seven games.
A club statement read: "The Board wishes to thank Bobby for his hard work, enthusiasm and commitment."
The Board also claimed that media pressure led to Gould's decision to step down.
The statement continued: "We feel that Bobby has been treated in an appalling manner by the local media.
"That treatment is not justified for anybody, let alone someone of the calibre of Bobby Gould, who has done so much throughout his football career."
