Brazil defender Alex is hopeful he will be granted the work permit he needs to return to Chelsea this summer. The Blues had to loan Alex, 24, to PSV Eindhoven after buying him in 2004 because he had not played enough games for Brazil to qualify for a permit.
That situation has not changed but Alex told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf: "The chances I will leave PSV are quite big.
"Chelsea are busy getting a work permit for me. They did the same with Salomon Kalou and several other players."
Alex will need a special concession from the Football Association before he can play for Chelsea.
English rules stipulate a non-European Union player must take part in 75% of his country's games in the last two years to receive a permit - and Alex has not featured in enough.
If he is allowed to join Jose Mourinho's squad, Alex will compete with John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho for a first-team place but he is ready to rise to the challenge.
"Chelsea are a great club but it is most important that I will play a lot of games there," added Alex.
"If I only sit on the bench, it will be difficult. But whether that will happen, you only know when you are there."
