Lyon boss Gerard Houllier has admitted they are hoping to sign Chelsea's out-of-favour defender Glen Johnson. Johnson's former club West Ham also want the 21-year-old England defender, but the French league leaders have emerged as shock rivals.
Houllier said: "We have been in contact with Chelsea over the possible transfer of Glen Johnson.
"We need him because of injuries and the African Cup of Nations. We'll see what comes of our interest."
Johnson's current lack of first-team action at Chelsea may affect his World Cup prospects with England.
Aulas said: "Glen Johnson is on the list of players we are following closely but it does not only depend on us but on Chelsea too."
Johnson moved to Chelsea from West Ham for 6m in July 2003 but has made only three Premiership appearances this season.
An added bonus for Lyon would be the fact Johnson has not played for Chelsea in the Champions League this season.
