Former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu has lost his appeal to the Court of Arbritation for Sport over his sacking following a positive drugs test.
The Court's decision allows Chelsea to pursue a compensation claim against Mutu, 26, who now plays for Juventus.
Chelsea are hoping to recover £8m of the £15.8m transfer fee they paid to Parma for Romanian Mutu in August 2003.
Mutu was sacked in October 2004 after a positive cocaine test and was handed a seven-month worldwide football ban.
The CAS ordered Mutu to pay Chelsea costs of £9,000.
Chelsea's claim for compensation will be made to world governing body Fifa.
