Walton made only five appearances for Leeds last season |
Simon Walton has joined Premiership side Charlton Athletic from Leeds United on a four-year deal. The 18-year-old product of the Leeds Academy can play either as a centre-back or in central midfield.
"When this offer came out of the blue, I knew it was too good to turn down," Walton told the website of his representatives, the Stellar Group.
Charlton boss Iain Dowie added: "Simon is a talented boy and he might surprise a few people."
"He's very competitive, a very strong runner in terms of power and a great athlete who is very comfortable on the ball.
"We think he's a very good investment for the future, but looking at his attributes he's a lad capable of playing in the Premiership sooner rather than later as well."
As a 16-year-old Walton, was handed his debut in Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell's first match in charge at the start of the 2004-05 season and went on to make 33 appearances during the campaign.
However, he made just five appearances last season.
Charlton winger Lloyd Sam has signed a new four-year contract. The 21-year-old made just three first-team appearances last season, but is pleased that new Addicks boss Iain Dowie has shown faith in him.
He told the club website: "I thought the change of manager might bring about some complications, but it hasn't.
"As my old contract was up at the end of this season I've been in negotiations since Christmas, but I'm delighted to sign the new deal."
Dowie said: "We have got great hopes for Lloyd.
"He is a very exciting talent, a great lad and very bubbly around the place; he's always got a bright smile on his face and I've certainly enjoyed working with him in the last three or four days."
