Alan Thompson has left his coaching position at Newcastle, paving the way for a possible return to Celtic.

The 36-year-old has been strongly tipped to join former team-mates Neil Lennon and Johan Mjallby in the Celtic management team for next season.

Celtic have yet to confirm Lennon as their new manager but an announcement is expected soon.

Thompson won four Scottish Premier League titles as a player with Celtic between 2000-07.

A statement issues by the Magpies said: "Newcastle United can confirm that Alan Thompson has left his role with the club by mutual consent.

"Alan served Newcastle United exceptionally well as academy coach during the 2008-09 season, and as reserve team coach last season.

"The club would like to thank Alan for his commitment to player development and coaching during his time at Newcastle.

"Newcastle United wish him every success in his future career."
