Mowbray riled by defensive errors

Mowbray was alarmed by the gaps in the Celtic defence

Celtic manager Tony Mowbray was left to rue more defensive errors after watching his side's 2-1 Old Firm defeat at Ibrox.

"Today we gave Rangers a two-goal start and they were goals that they didn't really have to do anything for," he told BBC Scotland.

"Long punts down the middle, allowing the ball to bounce - you could've driven a bus through the gaps."

Defeat saw Rangers narrow the gap on league leaders Celtic to a point.

Kenny Miller took advantage of calamitous Celtic defending to fire Rangers into a two-goal lead and Aiden McGeady's penalty failed to trigger a comeback.

And Mowbray expressed frustration after his side suffered their first league defeat of the season.

"It's frustrating and disappointing because, generally, I thought we were the team that controlled the match," he said.

"But people are only interested in the result today and I congratulate Rangers for getting the three points."

Referee Craig Thomson awarded Celtic a penalty after Sasa Papac fouled debutant Zheng Zhi, but the visitors also claimed for a spot kick when David Weir appeared to foul Shaun Maloney.

"I haven't seen it again but I never get over-anxious about things like that. If replays show it should've been a penalty does it matter?" said Mowbray.

"The referee makes a decision as he sees it and has one shot of making that decision. He made it and didn't give it."

Mowbray said he was happy with Zheng Zhi's display on his debut, adding that he believed the China captain would be comfortable with Celtic's style of play.

The Celtic manager admitted that it was a blow to lose regular full-backs Andreas Hinkel and Danny Fox to injury before the game.

"They're very important footballers for us. I like my full-backs to be almost my best players, technically, so they can exploit space and deliver balls into the box," said Mowbray.

"And we were without both of them today. The frustration has been over the soft goals we've conceded."
