Mowbray guns for Old Firm victory

Celtic manager Tony Mowbray
Mowbray wants his Celtic players to enjoy the derby atmosphere

Tony Mowbray is determined to enjoy his first Old Firm derby as Celtic manager as his side look to extend their four-point lead at the top of the table.

Mowbray said he would impress on his players that the white-hot atmosphere on Sunday should be savoured.

"We are in the position where going to Ibrox is a good game for us. We can open up a gap that will give us a bit of breathing space," he said.

Celtic and Rangers are both undefeated domestically going into the game.

The visitors would remain top of the Scottish Premier League, even if they lose to the defending champions.

"But we will try to be positive and ask a few questions if we can," said Mowbray.

We have good players also and we go there in confident mood trying to get a result

"The occasion is there to be enjoyed and we will be trying to get a result to make a lot of people happy.

"Rangers are a good side with talented individuals and I like their midfield players.

"But we have good players also and we go there in confident mood."

Mowbray believes the derby at Ibrox gives his side the perfect opportunity to recover from the disappointing 1-1 Europa League draw with Rapid Vienna - which left them bottom of Group C with only one point from two games.

"We can see from Thursday's game that, while there were positives, we are not a European superpower at this moment in time," he said.

"When the next transfer window comes along, we will try to move things around again.

"Every football manager's responsibility is to improve their team as they go along, which is what we will try to do."

Celtic midfielder Aiden McGeady

Mowbray is waiting to see if Andreas Hinkel and Pat McCourt are passed fit before selecting his side but revealed he had already decided on his central defensive pairing.

Glenn Loovens was the man to miss out against Rapid Vienna, with Stephen McManus and Gary Caldwell getting the nod.

"In this job, there is a thousand people who will tell you are not picking the right team, or you are not getting them to do this, you are not getting them to do that," continued Mowbray.

"People say, 'I can't believe he did this - why did he do that?'

"You can't have a thousand people picking the team and managing the team.

"There is only one man who does it, if you get your shot at it, so you must do it your way."

Rangers have slipped behind their old rivals after three consecutive 0-0 league draws, but Celtic winger Aiden McGeady is not reading too much into their opponents' goal-scoring drought.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

"Previous form doesn't really count going into an Old Firm game," said the Republic of Ireland international.

"We were playing some good stuff ahead of a couple of games last season and just didn't get going, so anything can happen on the day."

McGeady has yet to play in a winning team at Ibrox but admitted he enjoyed the extra edge in derby games away from home.

"For every Celtic fan growing up, it's the game you want to play in," he said. "We've had a couple of good performances when we should have won and to do well there is just that bit more rewarding.

"It's a massive game for us. If we come away with three points, it's going to give us a healthy lead at the top of the table."
