Hibernian have turned their attention to other goalkeeping targets after being told by Celtic they must pay a transfer fee for Mark Brown.
The 28-year-old was signed in 2007 from Inverness as cover for Artur Boruc.
But Celtic have recruited Boruc's fellow Poland international Lukasz Zaluska from Dundee United.
That had sparked Hibs' interest in Brown, but Celtic want to cash in on the keeper who has a year to run on his contract in Glasgow.
Brown came through the ranks at Celtic's Old Firm rivals Rangers before moving to Motherwell in 2001 and then on to Inverness the following year.
It was during his spell with the Highlanders that Brown won both of his Scotland B caps.
Hibs had made contact with Dani Mallo, but the departing Falkirk goalkeeper is reportedly close to signing a deal in his Spanish homeland with Castellon.
Meanwhile, former Raith Rovers and Dunfermline goalkeeper Scott Thomson is poised to join Hibs as a coach.
Hibs this week parted company with goalkeeping coach Gordon Marshall, while Thomson left the same post at Dundee United this summer.
