Brown believes Mowbray would bring attacking flair to Celtic

Former Scotland manager Craig Brown believes the appointment of Tony Mowbray as Celtic manager would herald a new dawn at the club.

BBC Scotland understands that the West Brom boss has been offered the job - but the English Premier League club say no agreement has been reached.

"I think Tony would bring a good style of football to Celtic," Brown said.

"(His assistant) Peter Grant is also very Celtic-minded, so the fans would get the full package."

Mowbray guided West Brom to the Premier League in 2008, but suffered relegation to the Championship after only one season in the top-flight.

However, Brown feels the former Celtic defender has the necessary skills to work within a tight transfer budget and deliver success to the Glasgow giants.

"When West Brom lost the play-off to Derby County, they were the better side - Derby County stole it," said Brown.

"He might have failed to keep them up, but their budget is tight - which is similar to Celtic.

"The problem with Celtic is their finances; Celtic and Rangers have a huge handicap in terms of European competition - the bottom team in the Premiership get £31.5m, which would be a godsend to Celtic and Rangers.

"Tony has has experienced Scottish football and made a good go of it in the Premier League and Championship. But the pull of Celtic is strong.

Brown also suggested that Celtic's pursuit of Mowbray represented a more prudent approach by the board.

"It's a false economy for Celtic or Rangers to go for a cheap option," said Brown.

"If they could break the bank and get someone like David Moyes, it would cost them a fortune.

"And while Celtic are a far bigger club than Everton, Moyes is playing in a bigger environment and he has the attraction of a big game every week.

"But with Celtic, he would be guaranteed Europe every year and I think Celtic should have paid whatever it would have cost to get him, which would have been an investment."
