Former Celtic midfielder Peter Grant has said his old club can reignite their title hopes with a win against Rangers on Wednesday.

After Sunday's 4-1 victory at Motherwell, Grant says a third SPL title is still possible, even though Celtic are in the "last-chance saloon".

"If Celtic win it goes back to one point and that gives you something different to look at," said Grant.

"The way things went on Sunday, it gives them a chance again."

The former Scotland international, who spent 15 years at Parkhead, also feels the Celtic manager Gordon Strachan was receiving unfair criticism.

Grant said the Celtic manager deserved credit after winning two titles in a row and reaching the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time in the club's history.

"I think we should tipping our hat to him instead of criticising him," said Grant.

"He deserves to survive, there's no doubt about that. Unfortunately when you are at the Old Firm, there is no second place.

"Whether you have 2,000 people at the game or 62,000 people, they expect you to win every game.

"Now it's a short-term fix, manager's jobs unfortunately. You are not allowed to build anything."

Grant also feels that Rangers' fixture congestion has given Celtic some breathing space, but that the club will have to win all their remaining games.

"I think Rangers' success is helping Celtic a little bit because they are playing in cup ties," added Grant.

"Even though there are games in hand, people always tell you points in the bag are more important.

"It gives you that bit between the teeth again. It is last-chance saloon, no doubt about that.

"But it was a great fillip knowing their strikers scored on Sunday."
