Celtic manager Gordon Strachan insists possible new signings are not dependant on the departure of Stilian Petrov. Reports have suggested that Blackburn could bid for Petrov and that Celtic are interested in Ajax midfielder Steven Pienaar as a replacement.
But Strachan said: "We can bring people in and people don't have to go out.
"There has not been an offer from Blackburn for Stilian and he has sat down regularly for the last month for talks about a new contract."
Strachan was tight-lipped on speculation linking him with a move for 23-year-old South African international Pienaar.
"Stilian really wants to stay here and that is good," he said. "We really want him to stay.
"What I can tell you is the truth and we deal just now with club's agents and different people, like scouts, to bring in players.
"It might be six months or 18 months down the line, so we are doing our homework already on players.
"We talk to our scouts about who we need for 18 months' time.
"But what we don't do is give names away to anyone, which is unfair on players and clubs."
Strachan also reiterated his desire to keep Du Wei beyond the January window, despite the China defender's failure to break into the first team.
"He has been absolutely fantastic and is quite willing to wait as long as it takes," said Strachan.
"But, with the way our defenders are playing, he may have to wait a while, which is good in a way because he gets to know everyone better.
"He has been settling in well and has been a great ambassador.
"We hope he stays. It is January sometime we have to make a decision."
