Celtic's Neil Lennon will be asked to appear before the Scottish FA's disciplinary committee on 20 September to explain his Old Firm dismissal. Referee Stuart Dougal's report will contain details of the midfielder's strong words and attempts to confront the official after the final whistle.
The SFA's Drew Herbertson said: "We understand that the player will be reported for misconduct.
"That will be passed to the disciplinary committee."
Lennon was shown a red card for what he said to Dougal after Celtic's 3-1 defeat by champions Rangers at Ibrox.
The Celtic captain then barged the referee before being held back by team-mate Shaun Maloney.
Lennon has since apologised on his club's website, where he was also criticised by Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell.
But the SFA have not waited until the arrival of Dougal's report to put their disciplinary wheels in motion.
"We can't comment at all on potential action that will come of this," said Herbertson, the SFA's head of referees and discipline. "The next meeting will be on 20 September and as to what action will be taken is now a matter for them."
Lennon had told the Celtic website: "Clearly, although I felt the red card - my first in the SPL - was totally unjustified, I understand that my reaction was wrong.
"I apologise for my reaction towards the referee and his assistant."
Celtic club-mate Alan Thompson had been dismissed earlier in the heated Glasgow derby.
"I spoke to the referee about his performance and he then showed me a red card while I was shaking hands with the Rangers players," explained the midfielder.
Lawwell added: "Neil has apologised and we know that his reaction was wrong.
"Any action the club takes will remain an internal matter.
"Neil has been an excellent servant to Celtic over the past five years and deserves the appropriate level of support at this time from both the club and its supporters."
Peter Rafferty, secretary of the Affiliation of Celtic Supporters Associations, said: "The Celtic supporters are 100% behind our captain Neil.
"We can't condone his actions and he is looking a lengthy suspension.
"But, as far as Neil is concerned, the bond between him and the Celtic fans is very strong and that won't change."
