![]() | Sunday, 17 June, 2001, 15:56 GMT 16:56 UK Larsson wins Golden Shoe ![]() Henrik Larsson celebrating one of his 35 league goals Celtic striker Henrik Larsson has won the prestigious Golden Shoe awarded by European Sports Magazines to the continent's leading goalscorer. Larsson's 35 league goals had him in top place prior to the final day of the Italian football season where his nearest rival Hernan Crespo of Lazio needed to score twice to overhaul Larsson. But Crespo only scored once in a 2-1 defeat by Lecce and Larsson added the Golden Shoe to the list of awards he has picked up in an outstanding season for the Scottish treble winners. Indeed, Crespo scored only 26 goals, but players in the Italian League have their tally doubled, giving the Argentine 52 points. Larsson's tally was multiplied by 1.5 giving him a total of 52.5. The Swede becomes the first player from the Scottish Premier League to win the award since Rangers' Ally McCoist won the Golden Boot in 1992. The Golden Shoe is the successor to the Golden Boot which was first awarded in 1967 by the French magazine France Football. McCoist's win in 1992 marked the end of the Golden Boot and it was relaunched as the Golden Shoe in 1997 - depriving McCoist of a second award in 1993. Kevin Phillips of Sunderland won last year's Golden Shoe with 30 goals. | See also: Other top Celtic stories: Links to top Celtic stories are at the foot of the page. | ||
