Carlisle striker Craig Curran urged to raise goal tally

Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott has urged striker Craig Curran to make netting the winner in the 1-0 win at Oldham the start of a run of goals.

Tuesday's goal was only the 21-year-old's fourth in 35 games following his move from Tranmere Rovers in June 2010.

"If we can add goals to his work-ethic and his determination then Craig can go to a different level," Abbott told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"But he has got to get those goals and tonight he will be delighted."

Abbott added: "His introduction and his goal and his performance were fantastic for everybody."

Meanwhile injuries to Sean McDaid and Joe Dudgeon, and suspension to on-loan Queens Park Rangers full-back Gary Borrowdale forced the Cumbrians to line up with winger Matty Robson as an unorthodox left-back in Tuesday's win.

"It is an easy position, as long as you don't complicate the game, full-back is not a tough position to play, and that is no disrespect to full-backs," Abbott said.

"Matty did everything that was asked of him, he got it, he chipped it down the line, he defended well, he got close to his winger, he denied people space and he did what good full-backs do, go unnoticed for large amounts of the game if you know what I mean.

"That means a full-back has generally done their job properly."

Robson has scored five goals in 74 games for Carlisle since signing from Hartlepool United in the summer of 2009.
