Madine awarded new Carlisle deal

Carlisle United

Carlisle United have handed highly-rated teenage striker Gary Madine a three-year extension to his Brunton Park contract.

The 17-year-old is understood to have attracted the interest of several top Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Newcastle United.

"It's just speculation really. I've tried not to think about that," Madine told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"It's nice to have the security and I'm looking forward to next season."

The 6ft 4in striker, who scored 27 times for the club's youth and reserve teams last season, was rejected by Middlesbrough two years ago after an unsuccessful trial with the Teessiders before joining Carlisle.

I don't think a move to a big club at this stage of my career would be right for me

Madine made his first-team debut for the Cumbrians towards the end of last season and was quick to praise the influence of the club's youth team coach Eric Kinder for his rapid rise.

"Eric has been brilliant. He's looked after me, anything I've needed to see him about his door has always been open," said Madine.

"I don't think a move to a big club at this stage of my career would be right for me. I will get more of a chance to play here and I think my career will progress better staying at Carlisle at the moment."

Madine's new contract will run until the summer of 2011.
