McDonald was Iain Dowie's right-hand man at Crystal Palace |
Carlisle have appointed ex-Newcastle and Everton midfielder Neil McDonald as their new first-team manager. The 40-year-old was assistant to Iain Dowie at Crystal Palace last season but left his post following Dowie's switch to Premiership outfit Charlton.
Carlisle were seeking a replacement for former boss Paul Simpson who left Brunton Park to take up the Preston vacancy earlier in the month.
McDonald began his coaching career at Preston before joining Bolton in 2000.
The former England under-21 international made a 525,000 switch from Newcastle to Everton in 1988 before joining Oldham four seasons later.
