Jay Bothroyd has been one of Cardiff's star players this season

Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd says he is "gutted" to be missing this Sunday's south Wales derby against Swansea City.

The Bluebirds' top scorer picked up his fifth booking of the season in Saturday's 3-1 win over Norwich City, meaning he serves a one match ban.

"I'm gutted. I'm disappointed I can't play in the derby on the weekend but we have to deal with that now," he said.

"Our squad this year is tremendous though, and the likes of Andy Keogh and Jason Koumas are there to come in."

Bothroyd will be a huge loss to Cardiff having scored 12 goals already this campaign.

The 28-year-old escaped punishment last week for his tackle on Luciano Becchio in the 4-0 win at Leeds United.

Bothroyd seemed to catch Becchio on the shin with a late challenge during the first half, although the Leeds striker was able to play on.

The tackle went unpunished at the time and the Football Association of Wales decided against taking any action, because the referee saw the challenge.

"My tackle against Leeds was highlighted a lot last week, but I went into that challenge with Becchio to win the ball, not to hurt him - I'm not that sort of player," added Bothroyd.

"I think that might have been in the back of the officials' minds against Norwich though because I didn't touch their player on Saturday.

"I've gone in for the ball, their player has jumped up in the air and the referee saw fit to book me for that."

Cardiff go into the derby on top of the Championship with Swansea third in the table.

The Bluebirds are on a seven-match unbeaten run, winning the last five, while the Swans are unbeaten in six league games, picking up four wins, but have not conceded in the last five games.

The Swans will also be missing a key player in midfielder Darren Pratley who picked up a fifth booking in Saturday's 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
