Stephen McPhail signs Cardiff City contract extension
Stephen McPhail has signed a two-year extension to his Cardiff City contract.
The 30-year-old midfielder, whose deal was due to expire next summer, has committed himself to the Championship club until the summer of 2013.
McPhail follows Cardiff colleagues Peter Whittingham, Kevin McNaughton and Darcy Blake in committing their long-term futures to the Bluebirds .
"I'm delighted as I didn't want to go anywhere else and my family love it here," McPhail said.
Cardiff, though, are still in contract negotiations with striker Jay Bothroyd, midfielders Gavin Rae and Chris Burke and defender Adam Matthews who are all out of contract next year.
Cardiff lost Wales international midfielder Joe Ledley on a free transfer in the summer after his deal at the Welsh club expired.
McPhail, who signed for Cardiff from Barnsley on a free transfer in June 2006, has played over 150 games for the Welsh club and was club skipper before Mark Hudson took over the captaincy armband.
The former Leeds United star led Cardiff to the 2008 FA Cup final and his playmaking and game-management ability has played a big part in Cardiff's back-to-back Championship play-off pushes - despite failing on both occasions, including last season's play-off final defeat.
McPhail continues playing after undergoing cancer treatment after being diagnosed with for stage one MALT lymphoma.
And after recovering, he thanked Cardiff fans and staff for their support during his tough time admitting: "I was taken aback by it all...They've helped me more than anything."
